ABOUT THE GALLERY
The 809 Gallery was an artist-run center operating from a single car garage out of the Sunnyside neighborhood in Calgary, which operated for a total of eight hundred and nine days from 2007 to 2009. It was host to a variety of local, national, and international artists, and organizations. Its mission was to spread the consciousness of contemporary art to a broader and hopefully unsuspecting audience within the Calgary art community. As well as offering an alternative to Calgary’s then mostly commercial gallery spaces for emerging artists. The 809 Gallery was supported primarily on community funding, most of which came from a massive silent auction from its first exhibition. Since it’s end a number of similar spaces have popped up around Calgary with similar missions, offering the opportunity for artists to exhibit their work and for the public to experience contemporary art in an ever growing and diverse community.
