Coat Check
Coat Check
==========
With the major lack of adequate affordable housing in Calgary and a recession in Alberta’s “boom” economy, many people are taking refuge in the streets and shelters of our communities this winter. That is why about twenty local graffiti writers, visual artists and photographers have teamed up with the Provincial Boom Commission to provide stylish custom painted winter coats for people in need of a little warmth. The “Coat Check” project has taken momentum this January with artists going out and purchasing second hand jackets, designing and decorating these jackets with custom artwork and then going back out on the streets and giving away these jackets in the spirit generosity, understanding and respect. Through teaming up with the PBC and the Mustard Seed Street Ministry we are able to make strong and lasting connections between artists and homeless communities. The show is taking place at the 809 Gallery (809er.com) on February 6th 2009 from 6:00 – 11:00 pm. On display will be some twenty photographs of jacket recipients modeling their new duds along with a few jackets donated by The Source to be auctioned off to raise money for the Mustard Seed’s arts programming. Visitors are also encouraged to take part by doing their own jackets, handing the coats out and bringing down a photo of the results. This is an ongoing project that will extend beyond the gallery walls and exhibition date. A web site is in the works and a lot of creative energy is being kindled by this event.
