MORRIS FOX: EMERALD CITY

Morris Fox - EMERALD CITY

-----------------------------

Morris Fox was educated at the School of Fine Arts at Concordia University in Montreal. His work deals with mankind's tumultuous relationship with history, myth making, the alienation of teenage dreams, the quiet devastation of growing up, and the ratiocinative tension between mythic progress and the decayed decadence of society on the edge of ruin.

In his painting series ABC Mythologie (2010-2011), he conjures a legendary world inhabited by monsters, dangerous god-like youths, spun around obscure stories and interpersonal histories, while linking the viewer through his retro found object sculptures to a glimpse of a time scarred world that is careening towards disaster; that is one beyond hope. Morris Fox's work has been featured in Toronto's Nuit Blanche (2011).

Coat Check

Coat Check

==========

With the major lack of adequate affordable housing in Calgary and a recession in Alberta’s “boom” economy, many people are taking refuge in the streets and shelters of our communities this winter. That is why about twenty local graffiti writers, visual artists and photographers have teamed up with the Provincial Boom Commission to provide stylish custom painted winter coats for people in need of a little warmth. The “Coat Check” project has taken momentum this January with artists going out and purchasing second hand jackets, designing and decorating these jackets with custom artwork and then going back out on the streets and giving away these jackets in the spirit generosity, understanding and respect. Through teaming up with the PBC and the Mustard Seed Street Ministry we are able to make strong and lasting connections between artists and homeless communities. The show is taking place at the 809 Gallery (809er.com) on February 6th 2009 from 6:00 – 11:00 pm. On display will be some twenty photographs of jacket recipients modeling their new duds along with a few jackets donated by The Source to be auctioned off to raise money for the Mustard Seed’s arts programming. Visitors are also encouraged to take part by doing their own jackets, handing the coats out and bringing down a photo of the results. This is an ongoing project that will extend beyond the gallery walls and exhibition date. A web site is in the works and a lot of creative energy is being kindled by this event.

Making It

  Making It Heather Smith =========== Heather Smith was born and currently resides in Calgary, AB. As a graduating student of the Alberta College of Art and Design, her most recent work explores invisible social and institutional structures through drawing and sculpture. The feminine subculture created by her drawn female figures responds to an idyllic desire to belong and contribute. Derived from 1950's-60's imagery, the representations evoke ideas surrounding conformity, productivity and prior ideals. "Making it", is a display of works which indicate the construction of an imaginary goal. The sculptures act as literal mirrors of the show itself, the women in static snow-globe positions work towards making the 809 garage out of paper and mirrors to house their imagined work. The work is therefore indicative of the maker, the work is made of makers. Title: Heather Smith Start Date: 2009-02-06 End Date: 2009-02-09

Kamil Krulis & The Sub-Linguals

Kamil Krulis & The Sub-Linguals ======================== Krulis shows a personal historic perspective of 2008 as seen through gig flyers for his band and DJ shows. The images are both delicious, shitty, funny and wretched. They are also re-manipulated in several interesting ways in terms of scale color and content and context. Krulis' band the Sub-linguals will perform a torrid  set to complete the installation. Christian Kuras & Duncan Mackenzie

Christian Kuras & Duncan Mackenzie

===========================

Christian Kuras and Duncan Mackenzie have been collaborating on art projects since 2003. We are based in London UK and Chicago USA. This hasn't always proved very practical. We spend a lot of time on the phone.

Our practice involves working in diverse media to produce objects, installations and images. To us, a work of art is an opportunity to reflect upon aspects of the human experience, upon the lives we live next-to and through each other.

We are drawn to reflect on the confusions and conflicts inherent in our everyday engagements. After all, even friendship and our most basic family relationships have their mechanisms and machines.
